Vocational Training Project -Tailoring

This is a project at Amar Seva Sangam (ASSA), that is supported by Handi-Care Intl. Since 2000, HCI has been funding the higher studies / Vocational training of hundreds of youth with disabilities at ASSA. The outcome has been stellar with 90-95% success rate of employment. Among the youth who have gone thru vocational training, a majority of them – especially women have undergone training in Tailoring, Handicrafts, Toy making and Book making.

Vocational Training Centre, Tailoring Unit, Amar Seva Sangam

Background:

Amar Seva Sangam established a Tailoring and Garment Making Unit, which tailors school uniform, corporate uniforms, and garments required by other manufacturing units. This unit was inaugurated on 21st Jan, 2000. The Unit provides employment to differently abled youth and adults and rural people, enabling them to make a living and to take care of their medical expenses. The modern tailoring unit is funded by BrahMos Aero Space, and has modern machines like SUNA/Juki/Ambarla Power Sewing machines, Overlock machine, Kaja/Button machine and Cloth Cutting machine.

In 2014, a Hosiery Unit was added to do sub-contract work for manufacturers from Tiruppur, renowned as India’s textiles manufacturing centre of excellence. The Vocational Training Centre also has a Notebook Making, Diary Making and Book Binding facility, which opened in 1997. Collectively, these three initiatives employ 63 people, of which 28 are people with disabilities and generate surplus funds to support Amar Seva Sangam.

The Proposal

The success of the above initiatives has demonstrated that, when managed efficiently, these units can generate surplus funds which are valuable for the rehabilitation activities at Amar Seva Sangam. It is therefore proposed to expand the facility, whereby a self-contained Hosiery Unit building can be constructed and additional machines purchased enabling the Unit to seek more opportunities in the market and deliver with confidence, generating significantly more funds to support Amar Seva Sangam’s needs.

Expansion of this facility is underway and Handi-Care Intl., is supporting this endeavor.

The Campaign

The total estimated capital expenditure cost for the construction of the Hosiery Unit building and for purchase of additional tailoring units is $ 200,000. Nearly half of this amount has already been raised, in part through contribution from Handi-Care, thanks to donors such as yourself.

Handi-Care seeks your support in helping Amar Seva Sangam raise the balance amount of $100,000.

The Benefit

Completion of the Hosiery Unit building will result additional employment for 30 trained tailors including the disabled youth who are now completing training at ASSA’s vocational training centre, and other staff, as well as result in surplus funds to run the unit.
